White Wines
This post marks the line between our Pinot Gris block, to the left, and Riesling, to the right.
Pinot Gris grapes were some of the first vines planted at J Wrigley in 2006, as a white compliment to the Pinot Noir that would serve as their feature wine.
Although he was initially interested in Chardonnay, John was told by a local grower that the available Chardonnay clones had been developed for the California growing season and took too long to ripen given our shorter summer season. Within a few years of these initial vines, Dijon clones began producing fruit that matured early enough for lovely Oregon Chardonnay to be produced. Today, the J Wrigley vineyard features two Chardonnay clones: 95 & 76.
Riesling vines were planted at J Wrigley as a tribute to John Wrigley's German heritage, and to honor his grandparents who immigrated to the United States after World War II. J Wrigley Riesling wine uses German yeast and is crafted using German-style protocols that involve long, slow fermentation and result in a beautiful dry Riesling that has been ranked as one of the best in the nation! (2017 Estate Riesling / 96 points & Editor's Choice; ranked 14 of Top 100 Wines in the World by Wine Enthusiast, 2018)
