Momma Vines

As you stroll the vineyard look for the pink ribbons designating some plants as "Momma Vines", a technique technically referred to as "Layering". When a plant dies and is removed from the vineyard, a vine from the neighboring plant is directed into the ground and back up in the area where the old vine once grew - this becomes the "daughter vine", which will eventually put down roots. Once the stem is large enough, the feeding vine can be cut and the plant will be completely independent. Layering allows us to start new vines without the significant watering new plants typically require in the early years.
