Suitcase Vines
This lower end of both blocks you are standing between now are planted with 828 vines, sometimes called "Suitcase clones", because they were originally brought into the United States through non-approved channels. Many of these have no documentation as to the origin. The 828 clone was reportedly brought from France concealed in someones suitcase. Through the years enough anecdotal evidence has been produced to indicate this might be an accurate description of how they came into the country!
At J Wrigley 828 fruit is included in our Estate and Proposal Block Pinot Noir wines, and also bottled as a beautiful single-clone Pinot Noir.
P.S. In case you're curious, we acquired our vines legally!

The tour continues up the hill and around the vineyard block behind you. Although we ask guests to remain in the upper blocks, additional blocks of pinot noir and chardonnay can be glimpsed at the lower elevations to the right.
